Our day began early, with the anticipation of exploring the Trezkinn and Royal Arch caves, two of the most renowned cave systems in the Chillagoe-Mungana Caves National Park, and the natural marvel of Balancing Rock.

Chillagoe is a quaint town, about a 2.5-hour drive from Cairns, offering a glimpse of the savannah landscape that characterizes this part of Queensland. We arrived at The Hub in Chillagoe to purchase our tickets and were greeted by friendly staff who provided us with essential information about our tours. Trezkinn Cave Tour

Our first tour was the Trezkinn Cave, starting at 11:00 AM. We parked at the Donna Cave car park, about 1.8 kilometers from Chillagoe, and embarked on a short walk to the cave entrance. The path was well-marked, and the climb up the 136 steps to the shelter shed was a warm-up for the adventure ahead.

Entering Trezkinn Cave felt like stepping into another world. The cave is renowned for its intricate formations, including stalactites and stalagmites that have been slowly growing over millions of years. The ranger-guided tour took us through passages and 11 chambers, each more fascinating than the last. The highlight was the "chandelier" formation, a massive cluster of stalactites hanging from the ceiling, illuminated by the cave's electrical lighting.

The tour was moderately challenging, with about 520 steps, including steep ramps and ladder-type steps. We had to crouch through a few low sections, adding to the sense of adventure. The ranger shared stories about the cave's history and geology, making the experience both educational and entertaining.

Lunch Break

After the Trezkinn Cave tour, we took a break to enjoy a packed lunch. There are picnic areas near the car parks where you can relax and take in the serene surroundings. The limestone karsts rising in the distance provided a picturesque backdrop, reminding us of the ancient coral reefs that once thrived here.

Royal Arch Cave Tour

At 1:30 PM, we set off for the Royal Arch Cave, located about 6 kilometers from Chillagoe. The drive was a bit dusty, but the excitement of the upcoming tour kept our spirits high. We parked at the Royal Arch car park and walked a short 250 meters to the cave entrance.

The Royal Arch Cave is one of the largest cave systems in the area, and the tour took us through a labyrinth of tunnels and lofty caverns. Hand-held lamps were provided, adding a sense of mystery and exploration as we navigated the passages. The cave's natural sculptures, formed by centuries of water erosion, were awe-inspiring. We spotted ancient marine fossils embedded in the limestone, a testament to the cave's long history.

This tour was easier compared to Trezkinn, with fewer steps and a more leisurely pace. However, there were still several low overhangs where we had to crouch, making it an engaging experience. The ranger highlighted the cave's unique features, including fig trees growing through the cave roof and the occasional glimpse of bats darting through the darkness.

Balancing Rock

After the Royal Arch Cave tour, we decided to visit Balancing Rock, a short drive from the caves. The formation is a striking natural sculpture, with a large boulder precariously perched on a narrow base. The walk to Balancing Rock was relatively easy, with a well-maintained path leading to the viewing area.

Standing before Balancing Rock, we marveled at the forces of nature that had shaped this unique landmark. The rock seemed to defy gravity, and the surrounding landscape of rugged limestone outcrops added to the dramatic scenery. It was a perfect spot for photos and a moment of quiet reflection on the natural beauty of the area.
